The prominent National Film Awards were established in the year 1954. Since 1973, the award ceremonies are administrated by the Directorate of Film Festivals of the Indian government. Each year the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. Generally, the national film award ceremonies are held in New Delhi and the awards are presented by the President of India to the winners for the year. The National Film awards are presented to honor and encourage the movies directed across India. The ‘Best Feature Film in Malayalam’ award was introduced in 1978. The inaugural award was presented to the film ‘Kodiyettam’ written and directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. The movie also won ‘Best Actor’ award for the year.
