The prominent National Film Awards were inaugurated in the year 1954. Every year the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. The President of the country hands out the National Film Awards to the winners for the year. The awards were introduced by the government of India to honor and encourage the films directed across India and featuring Indian art and culture. The ‘Best Feature Film in Punjabi’ was first awarded to Manoj Punj for his film ‘Des Hoya Pardes’ in the year 2005.
