Filmfare Awards initially honored the actors of Bollywood, in the league of hero and heroine, by awarding them Best Actor and Best Actress Award, chosen by popular vote. It was later that the need was felt for honoring performances that carried artistic merit. The need paved the way for the creation of a special award, in 1990, for acknowledging the effort of actor/actress who gave meaningful performance in movies considered outside the genre of commercial cinema. In 1997, this particular award turned official, when separate categories were created for male and female actors.
