The Telugu film industry is based in the state of Andhra Pradesh and is known as Tollywood. Statistics reveal that it produces the largest number of films every year in India, with about 245 films produced in 2006. Therefore, it ranks the second largest industry of Indian cinema, in terms of number of movies made in a year and third largest in terms of infrastructure in India. The industry has earned several Guinness records, the most films directed by male and female directors, the most films produced by a person and for having the largest film studio in the world. Yet, another record was made by the actor Brahmanandam for acting, in the maximum number of films (750) in a single language.

The Telugu film industry was conceptualized with the making of a silent film in 1921 'Bhisma Pratighna'. Later on in 1931, the first Telugu film with audible dialogue, 'Bhakta Prahlad', was produced by H.M. Reddy. Thus, the popularly known as 'talkies' films with sound, quickly grew in number and so did the fan following. In 1934, the industry saw its first major commercial success with 'Lavakusa'. Thereafter, there was no looking back for Tollywood. Telugu film industry has since, then, produced both quantity and quality movies. With its tremendous popularity, it has made itself eligible for the Filmafare Award. The Filmfare started giving award to the Telegu Film industry from the year 1953.
