The Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album has been handed out since 1992. Over the years the award has had many minor changes in the name. The award was known as Best Contemporary Jazz Performance in the year of its inception. It was awarded as Best Contemporary Jazz Performance (Instrumental) from 1993 to 1994. For the next five years from 1995 to 2000 it was awarded as Best Contemporary Jazz Performance and finally in 2001 it was changed to the present title. Till 2001 both albums and singles were eligible for the award. In three years 1992, 1995 and 1996, the award went to individual tracks rather than albums.
