The National Film Awards are considered as one of the oldest and prestigious film award ceremonies in India. The government introduced the awards in 1954 to encourage and honor the films directed across India. Since 1973, National Film Awards are administrated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festival. Each year the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. Every year the award ceremonies are held in New Delhi and the President of India presents awards to the winners for the year. The ‘Best Special Effects’ award is one of the sub-categories of Silver Lotus Award and was introduced in 1995. The inaugural award was presented to Venky for the Tamil movie ‘Kadhalan’. The film was a huge commercial success and was also the first Tamil film ever to be dubbed into Hindi. Kadhalan was released in the year 1994 and was directed by S. Shankar.
