The country’s most prominent National Film Awards were established in 1954. All the award ceremonies were organized in New Delhi and the awards are handed out by the President of India. Each year the government appointed a national panel to select the winning entry. The awards were introduced to encourage and honor the films directed across India. The ‘Best Feature Film in Tamil’ award was first awarded to the movie ‘Iru Kodigal’ directed by K.Balachander in 1969. The movie is a complete family drama of two women who are married to one man. The movie is still fresh in the memories of many people who have seen it.
