The country’s prominent National Film Awards were first handed out in 1954. Since 1973, the award ceremonies are administrated by the Indian government's Directorate of Film Festivals. The national awards were introduced to encourage the cultures of different regions of the country and promote the integration and unity of the nation in cinematic form.
