Sunday, January 17, 2010 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association did have a reason to celebrate It was the first ever live broadcast of the Golden Globes. The HFPA also roped in British comedian, actor, filmmaker and broadcaster Ricky Gervais to host the show.

The nominations were announced on December 15, 2009. Up in the Air led the race with six nominations. Avatar and Inglourious Basterds roped in enough votes to be nominated for four categories. Sandra Bullock, Matt Damon and Anna Paquin were both nominated twice. Meryl Streep also found herself nominated twice for the category; Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.
