The prestigious National Film Awards were established in 1954 and is initiated by the Indian government’s Directorate of Film Festivals since 1973. Each year the government appoints a national panel to select the winning entry. Generally, all the award ceremonies are held in New Delhi and the President of India presents awards to the winners for the year. The ‘Second Best Feature Film’ award was first introduced in the year 1954 and the first award was presented to Ramy Kariat and P. Bhaskaran for the film ‘Neelakkuyil’. This award category was discontinued after 1993. The last winner for the award was Gautam Ghose for the movie ‘Padma Nadir Majhi’.
