The Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album has been handed out since the addition of the category in 1988. Contemporary Blues was bought into the mainstream music circuit by artists such as Albert Collins, R.L. Burnside, Son Seals, Stevie Ray Vaughan and others. The award recipients included producers and engineers along with the artists from 2001 to 2003. In 1989, the award was handed out to a song instead of an album. The category was known as Best Contemporary Blues Performance until 1992 when it was changed to Best Contemporary Blues Album.
